General Safety Tips

We're committed to helping you use electricity safely. That's why we've provided helpful ideas for keeping your family, your home and your business safe from electricity-related accidents. Take a few minutes to go over these electrical safety "do's and don'ts"; it could help prevent serious injuries or even save lives.

Do's

Socket outlets installed inside bathrooms must comply with Electricity (Wiring) Regulations.

Fixed electrical appliances should be installed by registered electrical contractor. Don't use electrical appliance with an exposed conductive part which is not earthed..

Allow sufficient space for ventilation to prevent electrical appliances from overheating.

Try to switch off electrical appliances especially those high current demand ones before leaving your premises.

Unplug appliances if they will be idle for a certain period of time.

If appliances operate abnormally or if there are signs of overheating, stop using, switch off power and arrange for inspection and repairs by qualified persons.

Never plug adaptors into adaptors and avoid using adaptors filled with plugs where possible.

Switch off electrical items that are not in regular use at the plug and ensure that when we are away from the house for any length of time that you unplug and switch off electrical items as items left plugged in can be a fire risk and waste energy if left on standby.

Always turn the electrics off at the mains if carrying out any electrical repairs and only attempt repairs if you know what you are doing.

Ensure any electrical items are approved standard when purchasing and keep them correctly maintained where necessary.

When you're changing a light bulb, be sure to turn off the switch or circuit.

Use the correct wattage light bulb for all light fittings.

Circuit breakers and fuses should be the correct size current rating for their circuit.

Electrical installations should be inspected, tested and maintained regularly to ensure safety.

Avoid poor contacts when using plugs, adaptors or extension units and watch out for signs of overheating.

Stop using the lighting fixture if there are signs of overheating and have it rectified by qualified persons.

Determine the safe distance of approach (limit of approach). The limit of approach is not the same for all power lines. It depends on the voltage the line is carrying. The higher the voltage, the further the distance required. For example - the limit of approach for 250,000 Volt line is 6 meters. For other voltages and corresponding limit of approach, call our Customer Communications Centre for assistance.

Hire qualified persons to do any maintenance-type work on or near overhead electrical lines, such as tree trimming, or have the line de-energized by the local electrical utility or power supply authority.

Mark the safe distance or limit of approach. If the work is on the ground, cones or barriers can be used. A spotter will work as well. Take into consideration swing areas for tools, ladders etc. Keep far enough away so that if an object such as an antenna were to fall it would not be close enough to contact the power line. Respect the power of electricity - ensure that you, your family and co-workers apply caution when working near electric power lines.
